Consistency...

"I guess the only way you characterize it for me, he doesn't go up there thinking negatively. Failing doesn't scare him and I think that's a big part of what his make-up is all about."

- Joe Torre on Derek Jeter

Jeter ties postseason hits record - Yankees star goes 5 for 5 with a homer as New York overwhelms Tigers

NEW YORK - It was 11:22 p.m. in New York on Tuesday night when the crowd reached its crescendo. Derek Jeter had rounded the bases and slipped into the dugout if only for a moment; the shaking of the stadium would draw him back out.

He jumped to the top step, raised his hand in a brief salute of appreciation and retreated. There was no smile. Jeter is the Yankees' captain, which means that he must know that this could only be the beginning. And yet, even by the highest of standards, it was an auspicious one. Jeter went 5 for 5 with two doubles and a sizzling homer to center field that capped an 8-4 Yankees victory over the Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of this best-of-five division series.

It was Jeter's first five-hit postseason game and raised his playoff hit total to 147, the most in baseball history.

He also became the sixth player to go 5 for 5 in a postseason game as he tied the postseason record for hits in a game. Afterward, Jeter sat calmly in the interview room and did his best to look forward - as always - instead of back.
