The Hangover - Part II

I've seen this posted around the Internet today, and it looks pretty funny. Here is hoping it is half as good as the first.

And, again.

"A Long December"
- Counting Crows

A long December and there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last.
I can't remember the last thing that you said as you were leaving,
But now the days go by so fast.

And it's one more day up in the canyons,
And it's one more night in Hollywood.
If you think that I could be forgiven...I wish you would.

The smell of hospitals in winter
And the feeling that it's all a lot of oysters, but no pearls.
All at once you look across a crowded room
To see the way that light attaches to a girl.

And it's one more day up in the canyons,
And it's one more night in Hollywood.
If you think you might come to California...I think you should.

Drove up to the Hillside Manor sometime after 2AM
And talked a little while about the year.
I guess the winter makes you laugh a little slower,
Makes you talk a little lower about the things you could not show her.

And it’s been a long December and there’s reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last.
I can’t remember all the times I tried to tell myself
To hold on to these moments as they pass.

And it’s one more day up in the canyon,
And it’s one more night in Hollywood.
Man it’s been so long since I’ve seen the ocean.....well I guess I should.

All the best in 2011.

"Wall Street" Sequel: Michael Douglas, Oliver Stone On Board

Posted by Tom C.

I know, if I were the guest host for Leno or Letterman you would be staring at a blank television. Sorry. My power was out this morning, so I did not trade today. I hope to get a few charts up before X is back next week.

In the meantime you have this to look forward to:

LOS ANGELES — Michael Douglas and Oliver Stone are back together again with a sequel to their 1987 hit "Wall Street."

Douglas is reprising his role as Gordon Gekko and Stone is on board again to direct the sequel, which for now has the working title "Wall Street 2," said 20th Century Fox spokesman Gregg Brilliant.

Brilliant said the project is timely and relevant given the state of the world.

"We need to keep the story line under wraps, but it's literally ripped from today's headlines," Brilliant said. "It's going to be very big and very cool."

With the economy and financial markets in a tailspin, it will be different times for Douglas' Gekko. In the original film, corporate raider Gekko was a symbol of Wall Street greed and corruption during the boom era of the 1980s.

Gekko has endured because audiences give him the "same kind of respect we've got for the great white shark," Douglas said in an interview Friday with Associated Press Television News for his upcoming life-achievement award from the American Film Institute.

"He's a villain. Gordon Gekko is a great, old-fashioned villain," Douglas said. "And, interestingly enough, if you look at most actors' careers, their biggest achievement, not necessarily success, but (achievement), is playing a bad guy."

Academy Awards voters agreed. Douglas earned the best-actor Oscar for Gekko.

The sequel is scheduled to start shooting this summer. Edward Pressman, who produced "Wall Street," also is back for the sequel, while Allan Loeb ("21") wrote the screenplay.

Jon Stewart on CNBC

There were some good trades this morning. I just closed my last open position for ~5% gain (HOTT, a "top out" pattern). I will post some charts this weekend.

This may be the most amazing video I have ever posted. Regardless of your feelings on Rick Santelli's now famous rant, watch this video to see a retrospective of various CNBC calls and interviews over the past two years - and not just Cramer, but the Fast Money guys, interviews done by Faber, Bartiromo, and Carl Quintanilla; comments by Santelli and (former coke-head) Kudlow...and others. After eight minutes, it became clear to me what a cancer these people are for the average investor (if you are a trader, there is no way you should be watching these idiots).

The first few minutes deal with Santelli, and then the good stuff starts. Watch the entire thing to see how utterly unaccountable CNBC is for the crap they spew daily. I think they are more responsible for bankrupting the average investor than all the crooked companies, CEOs, and hedge-fund managers combined.

An open letter to Kellogg's

I don't smoke marijuana, but I do think it is idiotic that it is illegal. Joe Rogan - as usual - is spot on with his letter to Kellogg's. But as a general rule, Joe Rogan is usually right...and I don't just say that because he once commented on this blog.

Dear Kellogg’s,

I’m writing this letter to express my disappointment in your company in firing Michael Phelps as a spokesperson for your products because he was photographed while enjoying some marijuana.

I respectfully would like to communicate my opinion on this matter because I think it’s of great public interest.

First of all, although it is true that Mr. Phelps broke the law, I think any reasonably intelligent person would admit that it’s one of the most fucked up and corrupt laws that we have today in this country. Marijuana is relatively harmless and certainly far less dangerous than a host of other things that are not only legal but also readily available, like alcohol and prescription drugs. The only reason it remains illegal to this day is because it’s a plant and you can’t patent it and control it’s sale, and because if it were legal it would greatly affect the demand for a host of prescription drugs that rake in billions of dollars each year for pharmaceutical companies.

That’s it.

Marijuana has never killed anyone EVER in over 10,000 years of use. We’re not protecting people from themselves, we’re not saving the children - it’s just a horribly illogical law that is in place because of corruption and propaganda.

The fact that it’s against the law is just a disgusting reminder of how retarded our system is, not a reasonable reaction to a proven threat to society.

Inspiration for a new week!

I just watched the 60 Minutes report on US Airways 1549, which crash-landed into New York's Hudson River on January 15, 2009.

It was an amazing piece that covered the incident and reunited the passengers with the crew and Captain Sullenberger who saved 155 passengers and quite possibly 1,000s of people on the ground.

It was inspirational and helps put life in perspective - I recommend everyone check it out.

I am working on a mega-post explaining my new, simplified trading focus. I hope to have it up over the weekend. Until then, you will have to figure out this chart on your own (it shouldn't be that difficult):

Cisco Systems (CSCO) reported earnings after the bell and warned of continued hard times ahead. The chart of CSCO is representative of most charts, but it is still startling to look at; it has been a crazy decade and there are still 11 months left!

On a blog related note, people seem to prefer the "Random Family Guy Quote" over polls...

And thanks to everyone for all of the positive comments!

Weekend roundup

I only have one thing to say - Jack's back.

If you have read this blog for over a month, you know I am a huge 24 fan; I have high hopes for this season (4-hour premiere Sunday and Monday night). But I am already pissed about the Tony situation - I hope it is some elaborate plot and he is not bad. Depending on how intense it is, I may not trade again until February.

Dinosaur Trader has some good links up on his Friday "Linkday" post - check it out here.

A few days ago I posted several charts and said:

I am posting the charts below because they are setups that will be key to my 2009 trading. Ignore the timeframes and the specific symbols and look at the patterns - they happen every day, but people tend to miss them because they are chasing other setups or they are already in trades that are substandard (ie, trades that are not good setups...but you feel the urge to be in a trade - any trade - and you give into it).

This chart needs to be added - it is a variation of the C&H that Trader Jamie talks about, and it usually produces big results. I am not going to go into details here, but you should study the pattern and look for similar setups on your own...there are multiple entries on this chart, and it will mean more if you discover them yourself (hint - this is a very Fibonacci intensive pattern). Actually, this example is not as well-formed as several others I traded last week, but I am too lazy to go back through my charts right now!

I will close this post with a random picture of Spider-Man and President Obama. Have a good weekend.

Happy Friday!

My posting will be more sporadic than usual for the rest of the year - keep checking back or add Trader-X to your favorite RSS reader.

I still plan to make a post about Moving Averages soon (as well as a few other promised topics)...apologies for the repeated delays. On a related note, I added additional links to more charts on the post "Fibonacci lines, indicators, and the Holy Grail".

Random free giveaway!

I won a $50 iTunes gift card this past weekend, but truth be told I have a lot of credit at the iTunes store right now because of past gifts, et cetera. So I decided to share the wealth and give it away!

Below I post the opening lines from a book (we all remember books, right?). I am giving the gift card to the first person who can email me* and tell me the name of the book and the author. It would be cool if you knew the name and author without looking it up on Google (meaning you have actually read the book). But I have no way to monitor that.

Note - I can only mail to addresses in the U.S. - sorry guys. I will do something where everyone is eligible later in the month.

*only email answers count - don't post in comments. You can find my email address on the blog (it is not blatantly obvious, but you can find it in a few minutes of digging).

Warning - some language is NSFW and may be offensive to some (though I am not sure why you are reading my blog if this language offends you!):

"Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose a three-piece suit on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on Sunday night. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pissing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourselves. Choose your future. Choose life . . . But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?"

edit - I was impressed that I received a dozen emails in the span of a half hour...I have notified the winner, and thanks to everyone else who participated. The answer is "Trainspotting" by Irvine Welsh (note to a few of you - John Hodge wrote the screenplay for the movie).

The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight is released on DVD today. It is a great movie and an instant classic.

If nothing else, see it for Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker...it is a brilliant performance as his character personifies pure chaos. I don't think it is a stretch to say he should win an Oscar for his final role.

If you haven't seen it, you need to...if you have seen it, no doubt you will want to see it again.

edit - others seem to agree with me - Heath Ledger wins top Australian acting award for role in 'The Dark Knight'

edit - that should be "Quantum of Solace"...hey, even I have typos on occassion.

Which will surely be the movie event of the year. And that is saying a lot for a year that brought us "The Dark Knight" and "Iron Man".

Note - I had to attend a function last night, so I did not have time to post. I will also be gone after the market close today, but hope to get a chart or two up by Thursday morning.

Jim Cramer

I have been updating my del.icio.us links on the right sidebar with stories I find interesting and hope you will too...see "Things On The Internet That Caught My Eye" on the right (yes, a lot of political stories right now).

I was going to drop this one over there, but decided it was worth its own post. In this piece, Gawker details Jim Cramer's Erratic Year:

"Jim Cramer has changed his mind! Just last week, you may recall, the shouty CNBC stock picker appeared close to tears as he begged Americans to pull all the cash they'd need for the next five years out of the crippled stock market. Well, whatever, that was last week. Now he says that we've already reached "the beginning of the end of the crisis." That sure was fast! This, of course, is in line with his (physical and intellectual) penchant for wild gesticulation. Let's take a brief look back at Mr. Cramer's unpredictable recent past, shall we?"

Read the rest here.

I am torn about Cramer. I thought his first book, "Confessions of a Street Addict", was nothing short of brilliant. If you have not read it, do so. It is a real eye-opener. I also communicated frequently with Cramer via email in the late 90s...dare I say we actually had somewhat of a "correspondence relationship" that covered everything from trading to technology companies to sports events. Of course, this is before he became a "mega-star" (love him or hate him, that is what he is...his exposure is phenomenal). I even had a phone conversation with him once because a startup tech company I worked for had done certain "questionable" things with stock options and he was composing a story about these practices.

But, I grew tired of Cramer trying to predict the markets. I grew tired of the flip-flops. I grew tired of his calls to buy "XYZ" going into earnings; I mean, WTF? Even if earnings are good there are so many things that can cause a stock to tank...and Cramer would have his viewers/readers buying these stocks into earnings time after time in what was - to me - nothing but reckless gambling.

CNBC has guest after guest - including Cramer - that come on every day and tell you what they think is going to happen in the market, or with particular stocks. What bothers me is very few are held accountable because there are just so damn many of them, and once they leave they are forgotten until the next time they come on with new predictions. There is a reason that I only trade intraday - because I don't have the risk tolerance to trade on a longer timeframe given all the things that can affect a stock day to day. And I think trying to prognosticate on the market and individual stocks longer-term is a thankless job because your "predictions" are subject to too many external factors. So I feel for Cramer in that respect. But it is what he has chosen to do - and he gets paid for his over-the-top, inane antics...so I am glad there is someone holding him accountable.

Anyway, enough rambling. I still remember the Cramer from 10-years ago that I found to be helpful, funny, and insightful. Today I pretty much avoid him.
